Digvijay Diwas Victory of the Maratha Empire

Digvijay Diwas is a vaunting day in Indian history, celebrating the great victory of the Maratha Empire over the Mughal Empire in the Battle of Kharda. This battle, fought in 1670, was a defining moment in the rise of the Maratha Empire, and thus it marked the start of the Empire getting solidified as a central power in India.

The Maratha Empire, under the leadership of the far-sighted Chhatrpati Shivaji, became a major power of 17th-century. They were hard to get rid of with their uneven guerilla tactics along with their strategic cleverness and so they managed to repress the Mughal Empire. This was one of the many turning points in the ongoing conflict.

The Battle of Kharda

The Battle of Kharda took place in 1670 near Pune, Maharashtra. The Maratha army, headed by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, was pitted against a much larger Mughal force. Though they were few, the Marathas chose to use one of their preferred weapons: guerrilla tactics, namely ambushes, and moved fast, also forming alliances with local rulers.
The war was brutal, and the Marathas eventually prevailed in the end. This win was a heavy blow to the Mughal Empire as well as an incentive for the Maratha people. In addition to that, Shivaji Maharaj’s talents as manager and his faithful followingsmade him the extraordinary person he was.
