History of National Hindi Divas

The background of National Hindi Divas can be traced back to September 14, 1949 when the Constituent Assembly came up with the decision to adopt Hindi, written in Devanagari script, as the official language of the country. The intention behind this decision was to provide Hindi with a prominent spot in India’s multilingual environment, especially in view of the fact that a myriad of languages are spoken across the country.

The first National Hindi Divas was celebrated in 1953 and it has been continued every year also with the commitment of organizing events to raise awareness about Hindi’s essence as an Indian identity. The release of Hindi as the main language proved to be an extremely important moment in the post-independence history of India as it contributed to the growth of ties among the numerous linguistic regions.

World Hindi Diwas

World Hindi Diwas is an annual celebration that takes place on 10th January to acknowledge the Hindi language’s global significance. World Hindi Diwas 2024 (also known as Vishwa Hindi Divas or World Hindi Day). Theme was “हिंदी पारंपरिक ज्ञान और कृत्रिम बुद्धिमत्ता” (Traditional Knowledge and Artificial Intelligence).

History of World Hindi Diwas

The origins of World Hindi Diwas stretch back to the occasion on January 10, 1975, when the first World Hindi Conference was arranged in Nagpur. This was a great moment for the Hindi language as it brought together people from around the world to discuss how Hindi could be pushed on an international level. It had 30 countries’ representatives, which made it to be a truly global event. Let’s go to 2006 which is the time former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh declared World Hindi Diwas to be held every January 10th. Just not to limit its promotion to India, it is also a day for worldwide celebration. Consequently, Indian embassies, all around the world, have been organizing various events such as seminars and cultural programs to highlight the beauty and significance of the Hindi language.

Significance of World Hindi Diwas

Hindi is more than just a language; it’s a key part of India’s identity and culture. The name “Hindi” actually comes from the Persian word “Hind” meaning the “land of the Indus”. Over the centuries, Hindi has evolved into one of the world’s major languages, and today it’s spoken by millions across the globe, not just in India but also in places like Nepal, Mauritius, Fiji, Trinidad and Tobago.

The goal of World Hindi Diwas is to promote Hindi on a global scale, encouraging people worldwide to learn about its cultural richness and embrace it as a medium for communication. This celebration also helps highlight the role of Hindi in connecting communities and preserving a shared heritage.

World Hindi Diwas vs. National Hindi Divas

There’s often confusion between World Hindi Diwas and National Hindi Divas, but they serve different purposes:

World Hindi Diwas is celebrated on January 10 to promote Hindi internationally. It’s all about spreading awareness of Hindi’s global influence.

National Hindi Divas is celebrated on September 14 every year, marking the day when Hindi was adopted as India’s official language in 1949

In short, while both days celebrate Hindi, World Hindi Diwas focuses on the international stage, and National Hindi Divas is more about promoting Hindi within India.
